Where did the money go? How much money is left? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">You\u2019ll be a better manager if you think like an owner and keep the big picture in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u00a0Because accounting can get dry, it helps to visualize the concepts to see the underlying dynamics. Thinking of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">cash <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">as water <\/span>\u00a0is a useful tool to help understand the ways you can use an accounting system. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Double-entry bookkeeping keeps the books in balance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We illustrate double-entry bookkeeping by writing transac- tions in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0T accounts<\/span>. The left side of the T is always a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">debit<\/span>. The right side is always a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">credit.<\/span> Depending on where the account is classified within the equation ele-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">ments, an increase or a decrease could be either a debit or a credit. For each transaction, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">the total debits equal the <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">total credits.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The accounting system is based on a chart of accounts that establishes all of the pots where you\u2019re going to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">record transactions. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The complete details of each transaction are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">recorded<\/span> in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">the general journal. Each account in the chart of accounts has its own <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ledger.<\/span> A running balance is often kept in these account <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ledgers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u00a0The statement of revenue, also called the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> income and <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">expense statement,<\/span> shows how much money came in,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">where the money went, and how much money is left over a given <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">period of time<\/span>. It\u2019s based on the equation revenue<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u2013 expenses = net income.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The balance sheet shows you how much money the com-pany is owed, how much it has, how much it owes, and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">how much it is worth. It expresses the fundamental equation of accounting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The accounting equation\u2014assets = liabilities + equity\u2014is the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">foundation<\/span> of any accounting system. It assigns an<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">increase component and a decrease component to each element of the accounting equation, establishing normal balances for the increase of each type of account.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are three basic questions you ask as a manager\u2014How much money came in?
